Certificate of Graduate Study
The History Department at Rowan University is excited to announce the establishment of two new graduate programs: the Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) in History and the COGS in World History. These programs offer elementary and secondary school teachers an opportunity to study history on a graduate level for tenure, recertification, promotion, and personal or professional development. Students interested in earning one of these COGS will take 15 graduate level history credits (5 courses); to earn a COGS in World History, students must take 12 graduate credits on areas of the world outside of the United States. Students who are enrolled in the College of Education's Master's of Education (M.Ed) in Standards-based Practice may also pursue a COGS as part of their M.Ed.
Beginning this summer, the History Department will offer graduate courses in American, Latin American, European, Russia, Asian, African, and/or Middle Eastern history; all courses will familiarize students with relevant primary and scholarly sources as well as up to date historical interpretations and methodologies in the field. Courses will be offered in the evenings during the summer and academic year. This summer, for example, the department will offer two graduate courses. Colloquium in American History: US Historiography, offered by Dr. William Carrigan on Mondays and Thursdays, 5:00-7:30 during the June 5-July 26 summer session, will focus on studying classics in American history. Colloquium in Global History: Race and Identity in Asia, offered by Dr. Edward Wang on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00-6:45 during the July 9-Aug 2 summer session, will use literary and historical texts to examine how these issues impacted the rise of modern Japan and China. In addition, the department will offer at least one graduate course in the evening during the fall and spring semesters.
If you are interested in applying for a History COGS, go to the webpage of the College of Graduate & Continuing Education. The application process for both the COGS in History (G120) and COGS in World History (G121) includes a one page Statement of Objectives, transcripts, and two recommendations; GREs are NOT required. We strongly recommend that students interested in beginning the program in summer 2007 apply by April 1; students may take up to 9 credits on a pre-matriculated basis.
