Why Study at Rowan
Our program is set in the tradition of a Liberal Arts education. Courses offer an opportunity for students to extend their knowledge and enhance their competence in historical studies through direct, face-to-face interaction with Rowan's award-winning, full-time faculty members.
One of the distinctive characteristics of our program is flexibility. The Graduate Coordinator and participating faculty understand that most of our students are completing this program while working and/or other navigating other responsibilities. While maintaining quality, we seek to offer courses at times and in formats that work for all of our students.
Most of our graduate students are pursuing the Master’s in History for one of several, sometimes overlapping, reasons. First, they are a currently employed teachers seeking greater competence in historical studies and increased knowledge. Second, they are completing a Master’s degree in preparation for application to a doctoral program in history. Third, they are pursuing a Master’s degree as either a means of advancement within their current career or as a means of preparation for a career in public history, government, or the non-profit world. Fourth, they are securing the degree necessary to allow them to teach history courses at the college level, usually as an adjunct faculty member for a local community college. Sometimes, graduate students end up using their degree in unexpected ways. More information on potential careers for those with Master’s degrees in history can be found here.
