Field Service in History
Field Service in History is an upper-division history course that allows students to complete an internship in public history and enables participating students to acquire experience in such history-related fields as editing and publishing, museum curating, archival management, and historic preservation. Interns work with participating institutions that match their interests.
Students in the course earn 3 credits for completing 120 hours of internship service under the supervision of a history professional. While the course is centered on internship hours, class lectures include historic site management, grant writing, how to apply to graduate school, and finding a job in the field. A major theme of the course is professional growth.
Students have worked across the state in a variety of institutions including the Montclair History Center, Gloucester County Historical Society, History Making Productions, Red Bank Battlefield Park, Rowan University Digital Scholarship Center, the Battleship New Jersey, and the Alice Paul Institute.
