Career Preparation

We live in an era that is witnessing the integration of markets and economies across national boundaries. Economic globalization, transnational security threats, and international cultural exchange have opened new opportunities for those with relevant expertise. In today's job market, interdisciplinary training and familiarity with the cultures, languages, and professional and business practices of countries outside our borders is an asset.

The International Studies major's core courses and concentrations (formally known as "specializations") in international business, area studies, global health, and global and comparative perspectives provide students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to adapt to the everchanging conditions in today's job market.
  • The International Studies major helps to prepare students for opportunities in business, government, or the non-profit world: graduates should acquire the intellectual and social competencies they need to be competitive as applicants for employment and graduate or professional study in a wide range of fields.

  • Potential fields related to international studies includes international trade, management and management consulting, service industries, intelligence and security, public relations, international law, and international education. International Studies majors will be prepared to apply for entry-level jobs within both governmental units and non-governmental organizations and foundations devoted to international relations, humanitarian relief, international development, international public health, and related areas.

  • For enhanced career prospects, we strongly recommend that students continue their language study through at least the third year, study abroad in a country that speaks that language, and participate in an internship related to their interests in international studies. Students should also review the International Opportunities page to locate information about opportunities for undergraduate and graduate scholarships, work, and internships related to international studies and international public policy. As you'll see from that page, there's a lot you can do as an undergraduate to enhance your employment prospects after graduation!

  • According to Payscale.com, a website that provides online salary, benefits, and compensation data based on information drawn from over 1000 schools and 1.4 million employees, in 2018-2019 the average starting salary of students who majored in International Affairs was $46,700 with an average mid-career salary of $81,300. In terms of salary potential, Payscale.com ranks the International Studies major higher than majors such as human resource management, RTF, Geography, Organizational Leadership, Secondary and Elementary Education, etc.
  • The coordinator of International Studies keeps a small library of books (held in Bunce 162) related to international careers, internships, and volunteer opportunities. To borrow one of the books listed, email the International Studies coordinator.
