CUGS in International Studies

If you do not have the space to major or minor in International Studies, you can add a Certificate of Undergraduate Study to your major in either Global Security or Global Health Studies.

The Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) in Global Security is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students, professionals, and others with an education in the field of global security studies. The certificate is a strong addition to the resume of anyone interested in a career in international relations, public policy, intelligence, defense, military affairs, counterterrorism, diplomacy, law enforcement, international organizations, or international law.

The Global Security CUGS requires students take 1) two required courses that cover the range of issues and approaches in international security and 2) two electives drawn from theme-based banks relating to environmental security, health security, disaster response, and conflict and terrorism.

The two required courses are IS 25310 Global Security Clinic (3 s.h) and POSC 07319 International Security (3 s.h.) OR IS 215100 Global Challenges (3 s.h).

The Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) in Global Health Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with the opportunity to study the global and local forces (sociocultural, political-economic, biological, and environmental) that affect patterns of health and disease throughout the world. Knowledge gained in completing this CUGS will help prepare students to work in fields related to international health, including the government sector, international development, the non-profit or humanitarian sector, and international healthcare. The CUGS will also offer a new course of study and credential for students who wish to pursue graduate education.

The Global Health Studies CUGS will consist of 4 courses (12 semester hours), two of them required and two drawn from a bank of electives.

The two required courses, which offer a foundation in analyzing global health problems from social science and humanities perspectives, are:
