Study Abroad

There is no better way to understand global issues, get to know a country or culture, or develop essential (and marketable!) language skills than to study outside the USA. Many studies have demonstrated that studying abroad benefits students academically, professionally, and personally. As a result, students pursuing an International Studies major or minor are strongly encouraged to study abroad, preferably in a country that speaks the language they chose to study.

Students may count relevant courses taken on Study Abroad programs towards their International Studies major and Rowan core or General Education requirements. For the International Studies minor, every Rowan-sanctioned Study Abroad experience will fulfill 3 credit hours toward the Area Studies requirements in addition to any specific courses the student takes. For purposes of the requirement that students take area studies courses from at least 2 departments, these Study Abroad credits count as a separate department.

For more information about Study Abroad, contact the Education Abroad Office. Applications for fall programs are due March 26 and applications for January intercession and spring programs are due Sept 26. Applications for summer programs are due March 1. International Studies majors should study abroad during the semester (rather than summer or intercession)--or even for an academic year--if possible to maximize language acquisition and cultural immersion. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA, but some programs require a 3.0.

Prices for Study Abroad programs vary widely, so research carefully: programs may be found, especially in Spain and some countries in Latin America, that cost about $10,000 per semester, including tuition and room and board (but not airfare). Students may use their financial aid towards Study Abroad programs; strong students should also apply for outside scholarships, such as the Study Abroad scholarships listed on the Scholarships for Undergraduate Study Abroad Programs page. Some of these scholarships programs have very early deadlines, so plan ahead.
