Department of World Languages

  • April 26, 2024 - The students of Dr. Marilyn Manley's "Modern Descendants of the Incas: Quechua Language, Culture, and History" course visited the Collection Study Room of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and learned about Inca artifacts from Dr. Anne Tiballi.

  • March 22, 2024 - Dr. Marilyn Manley (Department Chair), Terri Marion (Department Secretary), and the students of Dr. Manley's class, "Modern Descendants of the Incas: Quechua Language, Culture, and History" visited the Morning Glori Farmette in Marlton, NJ, owned by Brian and Angela Deery.

  • December 20th, 2023 - Mrs. Mariko Ono, Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement) Master, was invited to the Intermediate Japanese II & III classes to demonstrate a couple of Holiday Ikebana pieces for the students. Mrs. Mariko Ono has practiced and taught Ikebana for over 50 years both in Japan and in the United States.

                            

  • April 26th, 2022 - Dr. Marilyn Manley and her students visited Jersey Breeders Alpaca Farm in Tabernacle, NJ for the second time.

  

  • February 28th, 2020 - The students of Dr. Marilyn Manley's class, "Modern Descendants of the Incas: Quechua Language, Culture, and History," visited Jersey Breeders Alpaca Farm in Tabernacle, NJ, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Braatz.

         

         

  • October 29th, 2019 - Dr. Gabina Funegra - The internationally recognized director and producer, Dr. Gabina Funegra, presented her latest award-winning documentary, "Mother Tongue: Revisiting the Inca Language." 

          

 


Arabic Culture Club

  • April 1st, 2022 - The Arabic Culture Club hosted Falafel Night. Students were able to create their own falafel and enjoy a variety of Arabic food.

 

  • November 19th, 2020 - Virtual Cooking Lesson - The Arabic Culture Club taught those in attendance how to make falafel.

  • October 2020 - Meeting with President Houshmand - The Arabic Culture Club met with President Houshmand to share their custom masks and t-shirts.  In return, the President surprised them with gifts of his own hot sauce!

  • February 26th, 2020 - Entertainment Night - The Arabic Culture Club hosted a movie night which included an Arabic dinner buffet.  The comedy movie and socializing was enjoyed by all.

          

 

  • October 23rd, 2019 - Entertainment Night - The Arabic Culture Club hosted a movie night, with an Arabic dinner buffet, including desserts.

           

 

  • April 9th, 2019 - Belly Dancing and Dinner - The Arabic Culture Club hosted an Arabic dinner with belly dancing entertainment and lessons. 

 

 

  • March 7th, 2019 - Entertainment Night - The Arabic Culture Club hosted a movie night, with an Arabic dinner buffet, including desserts.

    


 


French Club 

  • February 26th, 2020 - Mardi Gras Celebration - The French Club hosted a Mardi Gras Celebration which included Jambalaya and freshly made Crepes.

         

 

  • November 16th, 2019 - Broadway Theatre - The French Club attended a showing of The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Broadway Theater in Pitman, NJ.  

           

 

 


 Italian Class Trips/Events

  • March 12, 2025 - Students from our Italian Food & Culture course and Dr. Alessandra Mirra had an incredible experience at Damo Pasta Lab in Philadelphia, where they explored the history and business of Italian pasta-making. Owners Monica and Danilo guided them through the evolution of pasta, from ancient fresh dough to medieval dried varieties, and the impact of the tomato on Italian cuisine. Plus, they were treated to a hands-on lesson on the difference between durum wheat and soft wheat! While enjoying two handmade dishes—tonnarelli cacio e pepe and gnocchi alla sorrentina—students engaged in a lively discussion not only about food history and culture but also about the business opportunities tied to Italian cuisine in our region. A huge grazie to Damo Pasta Lab for an unforgettable lesson—and some of the best pasta in town!

                                                

  • April 13th, 2022 - The Italian Culture Club hosted their Italian Breakfast Picnic. Students were able to enjoy a variety of authentic Italian food and drinks. 

 

 

 

  • Fall 2019 - Dr. Alessandra Mirra took her Intermediate Italian II students on a gelato field trip to Gran Caffe I'Aquila in Philadelphia.

 

 

  • Fall 2018 - Dr. Alessandra Mirra took her Intermediate Italian II students on a pizza field trip to Alice Pizza in Philadelphia.  This class also celebrated an Italian birthday party for one of the students.

      

 


Japanese Culture Club

  • March 11, 2025 - Japanese Culture Club (JCC) hosted another successful Calligraphy Night with Matsumura-sensei. Matsumura-sensei had picked two characters, 花 (Flower) and 水(Water), for the attendees to practice together for the night. Some of the members had become seasoned calligraphers and helped some newcomers. Jasmine Devine, the JCC's talented artist, introduced two new mascots for the event, "Mari & Takeshi." These mascots will appear in upcoming announcements and social media to support the JCC!

 

     

  • February & March 2025 - We hosted thirteen Japanese exchange students from the Shibaura Institute of Technology and Kanagawa University, affiliates of Rowan. These exchange students attended our Japanese Culture Club meetings and visited our Japanese classes. They created valuable friendships while experiencing language and cultural exchange activities along with our students.

     

  • November 19th, 2023 - The Japanese Culture Club worked with the Garden staff at Shofuso Japanese House & Garden in Philadelphia. After working around the beautiful Japanese park, the Shofuso Guide gave an educational tour of this 17th century style Japanese house. The club has held this fieldtrip annually since 2017, so this was their sixth visit.

     

     

     

     

  • April 21st, 2022 - The Japanese Culture Club hosted an Introduction to Japanese Tea Ceremony Event. Japanese Tea Ceremony ("Chado" in Japanese) has been around over 400 years in Japan, and it is considered the mother of Japanese art and culture. Chie Matsumura Dusk, Lecturer in Japanese, spoke about Chado and demonstrated the basic procedures. 

  • October 7th, 2020 - Calligraphy Night - The Japanese Culture Club hosted a calligraphy night featuring Matsumura Sensei teaching the art of traditional Japanese calligraphy via Zoom.

  • November 17th, 2019 - Shofuso Japanese House & Garden - The Japanese Culture Club worked with the Head Gardener at Shofuso Japanese House & Garden in Philadelphia.  After working around the beautiful Japanese park, the Shofuso Guide gave an educational tour of this 17th century style Japanese house. The club plans to hold this fieldtrip once per semester, this was their third visit. 

     

                

 

  • November 6th, 2019 - Calligraphy Night - The Japanese Culture Club hosted a calligraphy night featuring Matsumura Sensei teaching the art of traditional Japanese calligraphy.
