CHSS Scholarships and Funds
The Rowan Foundations awards about $2 million in scholarships to Rowan University students each year on the basis of academic excellence, financial need, and participation in on-campus and off-campus activities. Students apply for these scholarships through Scholarship Universe; the deadline to apply is usually February 28, and recipients are selected by committees. Many of the scholarships listed below--and many many more scholarships that aren't listed here, including external scholarships--are awarded through Scholarship Universe, so full-time students looking for financial assistance should definitely to apply to Scholarship University each year!
SCHOLARSHIPS OPEN TO ALL MAJORS

Dr. Kenneth Baird Charlesworth Scholarship
This scholarship offers about $3700 to help a Rowan student from any major study abroad in Scotland (ISA offers programs to Glasgow and Stirling and World Endeavors offers a program in Edinburgh) for Fall and/or Spring. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Paul Tong Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in the Humanities
Named in honor of former World Religions professor, Paul Tong. Apply Here
Study Abroad Scholarships
One scholarship of about $1800 for a student from any college or major with at least a 3.4 GPA who is studying abroad for at least a semester, and another scholarship of about $3900 for a student interested in studying abroad in Scotland with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
AFRICANA STUDIES
American Federation of Teachers
This account funds 4 scholarships. Only 2 are designated for CHSS students. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe, and are typically due February 28. Recipients will be selected by a university committee.
1- Martin Luther King Scholarship: awarded to an EOF, MAP, or Flack Mentoring Program student. Students enrolled in the Africana Studies major or Africana Studies Concentration are also eligible.
2- Paul Tong Scholarship: awarded to a Humanities major
ASIAN STUDIES
Asian Studies Scholarship
Scholarship awards academic excellence in Asian Studies. GPA requirement of 3.2. Recipient chosen by Scholarship Committee of the Association of Asian Professionals.
ECONOMICS
Amelia & Peter Kressler Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a junior or senior with a 3.0 GPA. 1st preference- Economics major. 2nd preference- Any Liberal arts major. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Dr. Bela Mukhoti Scholarship in Economics
Scholarship recognizes a full time upper-class student studying Economics with a 3.0 GPA. First preference to research interns within the South Jersey Research Institute for Economics and Politics. Recipient selected by Political Science & Economics department.
PROS Outstanding Scholar Scholarship
Scholarship recognizes a student who displays a commitment to academic excellence and also leadership within the PROS Program. Awarded to an upper-class student with a 3.0 GPA. Preferences: Rohrer College of Business, College of Engineering, Economics or Mathematics programs. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
ENGLISH
Recipient majors in English/Education with a 3.0 GPA. Scholarship awarded to a junior (entering senior year) with priority given to a South Jersey resident. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Maxine A. Hartley & Richard J. Johnson Scholarship
To recognize the academic efforts of an English major who is a single parent or a student with financial need. Scholarship is renewable as long as student meets criteria. Selected by members of the English Department.
Nathan R. Carb Fund
This scholarship honors the contributions of Dr. Nathan R. Carb by awarding a scholarship to an English major with at least a 3.5 GPA who intends to enroll in a graduate program. There is one scholarship available, selected by members of the English Department.
Richard Mitchell Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of this award is to recognize an English major who best exemplifies Dr. Mitchell's daring, audacity, originality and enthusiasm. This award is not based on GPA but recognizes outstanding intellectual ability distinguished by creative thinking. Good departmental citizenship is another factor in determining the award recipient. There is one award given annually selected by the English Department.
Rose Glassberg Student Teaching in English Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes the achievements of an English Education major who will be student teaching during the next semester. Must have a 3.0 GPA in the major. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
HISTORY
Scholarship awarded to undergraduate History majors with a 3.0 GPA. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Governors Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an academically talented junior Political Science, Law/Justice or History student with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
John Price English/History Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an English or History major; must have 3.2 GPA; must be Junior, Senior, or Graduate student with demonstrated financial need. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Scholarship honors the memory of Nick Yovnello. Awarded to a junior or senior with a 3.0 GPA and financial need. Preference to: 1-History, Political Science or Education majors. 2-Students who have worked at Campbell Library. 3- Students with an immediate family member who is a member of a union. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
LAW & JUSTICE STUDIES
Dr. Stanley B. Yeldell Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an upper-class Law & Justice major who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership potential and community service. Recipient is selected by the Law & Justice department committee.
Governors Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an academically talented junior Political Science, Law/Justice or History student with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Gwendolyn Ashford Faison Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to an Education, Law/Justice or Political Science major. Recipient must reside in Camden, have documented community service and a 2.5 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
PHILOSOPHY AND WORLD RELIGION MAJORS
The Philosophy and World Religions Department honors students each year with a variety of awards and scholarships. The department also has funding available to assist with student conference presentations, career development, and study abroad.
Dianne Ashton Endowed Scholarship in Religion Studies
Scholarship awarded to a College of Humanities and Social Sciences student who has successfully completed at least four classes in Religion offered by the Department of Philosophy and World Religions. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.
Entrance Scholarships (2 awards each year)
These scholarships ($1,000/year renewable for 4 years) are for incoming first-year students who declare a major in either Philosophy or World Religions. David Clowney Scholarship for Excellence in Philosophy - Apply Here
This scholarship ($2,000-$2,500) is for an outstanding Junior Philosophy major. Funded by the Philosophy and World Religions DepartmentCharles Wei-Hsun Fu Memorial Scholarship in World Philosophy and Religion
This scholarship (up to $1000) was established in memory of professor Charles Wei-Hsun Fu of Temple University. Becker Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a Political Science major who excels academically who will be attending graduate or law school. 1st preference: Student accepted into a PhD program with intention of pursuing a specialization in Constitutional Law. 2nd preference: student accepted into an ABA accredited law school. 3rd preference: student accepted into a PhD program in Political Science, regardless of specialization. Selection by Political Science Chair.
Dr. Bruce Caswell
Scholarship awarded to students who accept an unpaid internship in politics and/or students pursuing activities related to his/her Political Science major. Selection determined by the Director of the Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship. Application information may be found here.
George Jackson Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a student with financial need. First preference is given to a Political Science major. Students apply through Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

Scholarship awarded to an academically talented junior Political Science, Law/Justice or History student with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications will be submitted to Scholarship Universe by their deadline.

James P. Fox Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to students who accept an unpaid internship and are Pell eligible. The recipients shall reflect a passion for politics and aspire to pursue a political career like the late Jamie Fox. Student must have at least a 2.5 GPA. Second preference is a student with demonstrated financial need. Recipients are selected by the Director of RIPPAC. Application information may be found here.
Nicholas Yovnello Scholarship

Rick Rosenberg, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Recipient shall reflect the passion for new Jersey politics and aspire to pursue a future political career like the late Rick Rosenberg, Jr, the Republican political operative. Awarded to students who accept an unpaid internship and/or to students pursuing activities related to his/her Political Science major at the discretion of the Director of the Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship. Recipients are selected by the Director of RIPPAC. Application information may be found here.
SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is offering several undergraduate scholarships to students majoring in one of the Department’s majors: Sociology, Anthropology, Emergency Management, and Human Services. A team of faculty members will determine the scholarships to be awarded, based on (a) student’s commitment to the major and field of study; (b) student’s plan to make use of the major for an intended career or graduate school; (c) financial or other need that the scholarship will address.

Thelma Rebecca Dyer Caswell and Helen Criden Cohen Scholarship
Recipients must be enrolled in either the Women’s and Gender Studies Program or a Women’s and Gender Studies course. Preference to first-generation college attendee who also has a single parent. If no qualified student meets this preference, the scholarship can be awarded to a Women’s and Gender Studies student. Selected by Women and Gender Studies Advisory Board.
