Biography
Kate Slater received her B.A. in English from Sonoma State University (2006) and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Literature from the University of California, San Diego (2010, 2013). Her research and teaching focus primarily on twentieth- and twenty-first century children’s and young adult (YA) literature. She has published academic articles in Genre: Forms of Discourse and Culture, Children’s Literature in Education, The Lion and the Unicorn, and the Children’s Literature Association Quarterly, as well as multiple chapters in edited book collections; she’s also a co-founder and editorial board member of the journal Research on Diversity in Youth Literature. Her current book project argues that queer female characters in YA literature grow and move in ways that trouble sequential development. Dr. Slater teaches several courses on children’s literature, Young Adult Literature, Queer Literature, Critical Methods for English Majors, and a senior seminar on queer YA literature.
