STARTALK Arabic Program and Summer Camp

Discover Cairo and Learn Arabic in 2024 with STARTALK at Rowan University for FREE!

Rowan University is proud to announce that it has been awarded a 2024 STARTALK grant in Arabic, administered by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of World Languages. Interested high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores residing in the South Jersey area are encouraged to apply. The remote pre-camp, in-person two-week summer camp, and remote post-camp activities are carefully and intentionally designed to introduce students to Arabic, Arabic-speaking peoples and their cultures, and to the new opportunities and future possibilities that learning Arabic can offer in their career pathways and their lives in general.

Interested and committed area high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores within commuting distance of Rowan University's Glassboro campus are eligible. Successful applicants will receive tuition-free remote instruction and participate in a 2-week summer camp experience. Upon completion of the program, students will receive 6 Rowan University credits for Elementary Arabic I (3 credits) and Elementary Arabic II (3 credits). The lead instructor will be Lecturer Tarek Mousa, Coordinator of Rowan's program in Arabic.

Classes will immerse the students in the target language, integrating Arabic vocabulary with basic language phrases, cross-cultural products, practices, and perspectives while engaging students in interdisciplinary projects, activities, and a field trip. While the program makes particular reference to the life, food, music, art and architecture of the city of Cairo, Egypt, its broader goal is to introduce students to the Arabic-speaking world generally.

• Notice of Acceptance: Monday, February 5

• Overall Duration of the Program: March 26 to August 1:
  • Pre-Camp Remote Instruction: March 26 to July 2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30pm to 8:00pm
  • In-person Camp: Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 19, 10:00am to 2:30pm
  • Post-Camp Remote Instruction: July 23 to August 1 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30pm to 8:00pm
