Choosing a Major
Many students who enter Rowan as freshmen are not ready to choose a major. This is normal because of the enormous number of possible careers to choose from and because most students have only worked in fields that they do not plan to remain in. The three most important considerations that students need to explore at this time are:
- Are you thinking about changing or declaring a major? Please read this document for important advising information.
- Information about themselves, their interests and preferences
- Information about Rowan Majors
- Information about the world of work
Fortunately, we live in a time in which many of these considerations can be explored using tools which are available online. In fact much of the information you need to make an educated major and career decision, is accessible via computer.
On-Line Major and Career Help
Here are some useful online tools to help you assess yourself, majors of interest and the world of work:
- Contact the University Advising Center (UAC) for information on FOCUS-2, a computerized search inventories to compare your characteristics and those needed in positions in the world of work.
- Go to the web site of the programs you are interested in by linking to the Undergraduate Catalog.
- Make a list of prospective majors that you want to research further. Take introductory or exploratory classes in academic areas that potentially interest you. Talk to students who are enrolled in majors that interest you.
- Talk to faculty, friends, relatives and others about those areas you are interested in. See if they know people who work in areas you are interested in. Contact these people.
