Requirements for the Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) in Counterterrorism Response Operations

The Certificate of Undergraduate Study in Counterterrorism and Emergency Response Operations is designed to provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of national security strategies, including the legal charter, presidential executive orders, and the framework which guides the operation of national security agencies. Specifically, the program analyzes the role and function of counter intelligence and the intelligence community. It will emphasize terrorist cultures, terrorist history and organization, terrorist capabilities, terrorist finance and international money-laundering, threat assessment, intelligence operations, incident command systems, border security, emergency response, joint operations, surveillance and communications systems, cyberterrorism, weapons of mass destruction, counterterrorist operations, and applications to specific terrorist organizations and threats; the strengths and weaknesses of counterterrorist tools, including intelligence, diplomacy, law enforcement, and military force; the policy challenges in erecting security countermeasures and managing terrorist incidents; issues of civil liberties and morality in countering terrorism; the role of the public and the media; and proposals for revising U.S. counterterrorist programs.

The Certificate of Undergraduate Study will consist of 15 credits. To be granted the CUGS in Counterterrorism and Emergency Response Operations, students must complete all courses required for the CUGS in Counterterrorism and Emergency Response Operations with at least a 2.0 average. The requirements include the following five (5), three (3) credit courses:

LAWJ 05.488  Intelligence, Policing and Counterterrorism (3 SH) - (Prerequisites NONE)
LAWJ 05.326  International Terrorism (3 SH) (Prerequisites NONE)
DPEM 00.420  Risk Analysis for Disaster Preparedness and Homeland Security (3 SH) (Prerequisites DPEM 00.101  or Permission of Instructor)
DPEM 00.300  Bioterrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction (3 SH) (Prerequisites DPEM 00.101 or Permission of Instructor)
SOC  08.491  Social Dynamics of Terror, Insurgency and Civil Unrest (3 SH) (Prerequisites SOC 08.120, SOC 08.220 or DPEM 00.101 or Permission of Instructor) 

PLEASE NOTE: SOC 08.120 and SOC 08.220 are general education courses. DPEM 00.101 is Introduction to Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Students can satisfy the coursework by completing the courses at Rowan, transfer credit, or by a program-approved substituted course.

Appropriate course substitutions, with the approval of the CUGS program advisor, for SOC 08.491 and LAWJ 05.326, can be made from the following curricula: Law and Justice Studies (LAWJ), Sociology (SOC), History (HIST), International Studies (INTS), Political Science (POLSCI). All other courses are required.

Certificate of Undergraduate Study in Social Justice and Social Change 

The primary goal of social justice is to ensure all groups have the opportunity to receive resources equitably. The Certificate of Undergraduate Study (CUGS) in Social Justice and Social Change provides a sequence of courses designed for those seeking careers in a variety of settings geared toward community development, such as non-profit organizations, business, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, research and advocacy groups, faith-based institutions, and educational institu
tions. The program’s focus on inequity and oppression will enhance students’ understanding of diversity in organizations. The certificate (for current students or professionals in the field seeking more knowledge in this area of study) is aimed at human rights educators, advocates, legal practitioners, law enforcement officers, research officers, managers and staff of human rights institutions, volunteers, development actors, trainers, students, inter-governmental organizations, academics and other interested parties.   

Certificate of Undergraduate Study in Social Justice and Social Change 15 s.h.

The requirements include the following five courses:

SOC08.221 Social Problems
SOC08.330 Social Stratification
SOC08.230 Sociology of Minority Groups
SOC08.493 Gender Role Seminar or SOC 08.281 Sexuality and Society or 08.370 Sociology of Women
SOC08.488 Critical Race Theory: Social Justice, Advocacy and Intervention

To be awarded the CUGS in Social Justice and Social Change, students must complete all courses required for the CUGS in Social Justice and Social Change with at least a 2.0 average. The pre-requisites for these courses are:

SOC08.221 Social Problems (no prerequisites)
SOC08.330 Social Stratification (prerequisite Introduction to Sociology SOC 08.120)
SOC08.230 Sociology of Minority Groups (prerequisite Introduction to Sociology SOC 08.120) SOC08.493 Gender Role Seminar (prerequisite Sociology of the Family SOC 08.220; 6 credit hours in Sociology or permission of instructor)
or SOC 08.281  Sociology of Sexuality (prerequisite Introduction to Sociology SOC 08.120)
or SOC 08.370  Sociology of Women in Society (prerequisite Introduction to Sociology; SOC 08.120 or Sociology of the Family SOC 08.220)
SOC 08.488 Critical Race Theory: Social Justice, Advocacy and Intervention (prerequisite SOC08.221 Social Problems or SOC08.230; Sociology of Minority Groups; or Permission of Instructor)
