Awards and Scholarships

The Philosophy and World Religions Department honors students each year with a variety of awards and scholarships. The department also has funding available to assist with student conference presentations, career development, and study abroad.

Awards and Scholarships

Entrance Scholarships (2 awards each year) 

  • These scholarships ($1,000/year renewable for 4 years) are for incoming first-year students who declare a major in either Philosophy or World Religions. Funded by the Philosophy and World Religions Department
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarships (2-4 Scholarships awarded each year) - Apply here

Applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be applying in their Junior, Sophomore, or Senior year.
  • Complete this google form application and answer all questions
  • Have taken 4 philosophy and/or world religions courses by the time of application

David Clowney Scholarship for Excellence in Philosophy - Apply Here

  • This scholarship ($2,000-$2,500) is for an outstanding Junior Philosophy major.  Funded by the Philosophy and World Religions Department

Charles Wei-Hsun Fu Memorial Scholarship in World Philosophy and Religion

  • This scholarship (up to $1000) was established in memory of professor Charles Wei-Hsun Fu of Temple University. It supports the development of the academic study of philosophy and religion studies in global context and perspective. There can be multiple recipients.

Senior of Distinction (one for Philosophy and one for World Religions)

  • This prestigious, college-recognized award is for the graduating senior who best exemplifies the best and brightest of the Philosophy and World Religions department (not necessarily the student with the highest GPA). The winner of this award represents the program through ideals, goals, and contributions to the Department, University, or Community. Students do not receive money from the college for this award. There is a spring awards reception sponsored by the Dean’s office. One candidate per BA program. *Graduating senior status refers to eligibility for spring or summer graduation, although the Department may choose to recognize a fall graduate. The Philosophy and World Religions Department funds a monetary award for our departmental  Seniors of Distinction.

Medallion Awards (one for Philosophy and one for World Religions)

  • This award is recognized at commencement to a graduating senior. *Graduating senior status refers to eligibility for spring or summer graduation, although the Department may choose to recognize a fall graduate. The Philosophy and World Religions Department funds a monetary award for our departmental Medallion awardees. The criteria for this aware are: 
  • Academic achievement
  • Personal growth
  • Leadership

Professional Development Funding: (Apply here)

  • Departmental funds to support student professional development, such as conference attendance, conference presentations, professional attire, membership fees, training, language programs, summer institute attendance, etc. 
  • Amounts can vary

Study Abroad Funding: (Apply here)

  • Departmental funding to support study abroad

Other Departmental Awards and Funding

  • The Philosophy and World Religions Department also provides various awards and funds each year to majors and minors in our programs. Past awards have been given for Excellence in Philosophy, Excellence in World Religions, Excellence in Ethics.
