Rowan University's Department of History is well known in the region for its high quality of education. students gain an in-depth knowledge of the past an understanding of the historical process while developing valuable skills such as writing, research, and communication. In addition to course work, students can strengthen their skills by participating in field service projects at local historical societies, museums and other places of interest.
Many of our students plan to enter the teaching profession. The department offers a dual degree program with the College of Education. Students receive a B.A. in History and a B.A. in Education. Other students are interested in advanced degrees. The department has a proven track record of placing students in prestigious graduate programs.
Several student organizations give students the opportunity to meet other history majors, learn about the profession and have fun. Our students have participated in study abroad programs, traveled to regional conferences and won awards at regional competitions.
The faculty is active in historical research and has published numerous articles in prestigious academic journals and close to 30 books, some of which have been mentioned in the New York Times, Baltimore Sun and Washington Post. As members of the University's Speakers Bureau, faculty members are often invited to speak at local and regional events. Several national organizations provide funding for faculty research including the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and CCK International.
The department also hosts book signings, field trips and paper competitions and offers scholarships and awards to outstanding students.
